From Bark to Hope – A Tale of Grit Beneath the Waterline
With traditional rescue vehicles unable to navigate submerged streets and collapsed bridges, it was the K9 units who took the lead. Their task? Sniff out life, detect cries in silence, and sometimes swim headfirst into floodwaters to reach those left behind.
In Johnston County, a black Labrador named Maverick located a missing 4-year-old boy trapped beneath a collapsed porch. If not for Maverick’s relentless barking, the boy might never have been found.
Not Just Dogs – Teammates, Lifesavers, Legends
Locals were brought to tears seeing dogs in life vests, wading through knee-deep waters, eyes focused, never distracted. According to Lieutenant Samantha Hodge, rescue team leader in Wake County:
“We get tired. We hesitate. But our K9s never stop. They live to find the lost.”
Astonishing Stats from the Storm:
-
Within just 48 hours of Chantal’s landfall, K9 teams helped locate 31 separate entrapment zones, enabling the safe rescue of 19 flood victims.
-
Dogs like Axel, Ruby, and Ghost, who had served in wildfires in California and tornado zones in Oklahoma, returned once again — proving their unmatched instincts in disaster zones.
Some Names Will Never Be Forgotten
In Nash County, a Belgian Malinois named K9 Daisy found an elderly couple trapped in a flooded basement. Rescuers now call her their “Silent Angel”.
